Obverse Side

The obverse side of this reeded-edge coin showcases Britain’s national figure, “Britannia,” symbolizing British values and the embodiment of English sea power. Since 1987, Britannia has been the motif for gold coins minted by The Royal Mint. This coin now incorporates new anti-counterfeit features to prevent illegal imitations.

You’ll see Britannia gazing to the side, armed with helmet, shield, and sword. Upon closer inspection, wave-like patterns fill the background. From the viewer’s perspective, a shield-like structure in the design mimics elements of the British flag, held in Britannia’s right hand to complete her defensive stance. The edge inscription includes “BRITANNIA,” the year “2024,” the denomination “1 oz,” and “999.9 FINE GOLD.” If you observe closely below the base on which Britannia stands, you’ll find the name “NATHAN,” identifying Philipp Nathan as the artist who created this motif in 1987.

Reverse Side

The reverse side features the first coin portrait of King Charles III, sculpted by artist Martin Jennings and personally approved by the King himself. Perhaps you’ll notice that Charles, unlike his mother Queen Elizabeth II, gazes to the left! Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” “D G REX F D,” and the face value of this distinguished coin, “100 POUNDS.” “D G REX F D” abbreviates the British motto “Dei Gratia Rex Fidei Defensor,” translating to “By the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith.”

Anti-Counterfeit Features on the Obverse Side

To prevent imitation, The Royal Mint has incorporated specific security elements. On the lower left side, you’ll find a reeded circle. Depending on your perspective, this feature resembles either a trident or a padlock. The wave-like background and the reeding on Britannia’s shield are additional security features designed to thwart counterfeits. Around the height of the letter “N” in the inscription “999.9 FINE GOLD,” you’ll discover a micro-engraved legend reading “DECUS ET TUTAMEN,” translating to “An Ornament and a Safeguard.”
