1 oz Kangaroo Silver Coin | 2024
The Obverse
This side features the quintessential animal symbol of Australia: the giant kangaroo. Due to its long tail and long legs, the kangaroo cannot move backward, making it a symbol of progress for the Australian people. The animal is depicted in motion, framed by a kind of sunburst. Outside this frame, you can read the inscription: “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO.” Upon closer inspection, you will see “P125” on the right side of the coin, commemorating the 125th anniversary of the renowned Australian mint, Perth Mint. Additionally, you will find the minting year “2024,” the fine weight “1 oz,” and the purity “9999 SILVER” engraved along the reeded edge, providing information about the coin’s fine content.
The Reverse
Here, you see the portrait of the English King Charles III, who, unlike his mother Queen Elizabeth II, is looking to the left. On the right side, near the shoulder of the portrait, you will find the initials “DT,” indicating the creator of the portrait, Dan Thorne. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions: “CHARLES III AUSTRALIA” and the denomination “1 DOLLAR.” The fine weight of this impressive coin is 31.1035g.
About the Perth Mint
As the name suggests, this mint is located in the Australian city of Perth. It began operations in 1899 as a branch of the London-based Royal Mint. The Perth Mint produces products made of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, including investment coins and precious metal bars, and minted circulation coins until 1983. Since these investment coins, such as the described 1 oz Kangaroo Silver Coin, are considered legal tender, the obverse now features the portrait of English King Charles III.
